I'm in the middle of all that nastiness.
My story begins with me in Amarillo (for work) and a flight home for Friday 5:15 p.m. Everyone at that point knew of the pending winter storm that was coming across the country and the actual wintery storms were not expected to come in Amarillo until later Friday evening/early Saturday morning. I thought I'd be able to make my flight, no problem.
Then around 6 p.m. on Thursday, I got notified that my flight was cancelled. Oh shoot. I quickly checked into it and rebooked for Friday 12:50 p.m. Whew, disaster averted... or so I thought.
Then a couple hours later, I got another notification that said the flight that I just rebooked got cancelled as well. Oh shoot. Now there's nothing available for Friday. I called Southwest and after a long wait and subsequent conversion with the rep, the next available flight was not until Sunday 5 p.m. 😫
Sunday! And who knows if that flight would even leave the ground. The weekend was when the weather was to get even more nasty. Being that I was flying with Southwest, there were no direct flights home so there would be a stop in Dallas, which was in the center of the forecasted ice storm.
Staying another two nights in Amarillo (or more) and leaving the family home during the winter storm (and possible disaster) was not an option. I opted to take my rental car and drive all the way home.

The differences explained in terms I'm familiar with.
Friday morning was when I began my long journey home. It definitely got colder but the winter storm had yet to arrive. By the time I got to the DFW area, it was constant rain but at least it wasn't freezing rain. My only issue was how sleepy I was... I took multiple pit stops and a couple of naps. In the end, it took me 13 hours to finally get home.

Lucky that I got a free upgrade on my rental car or else I'd have be stuck driving a Corolla (or equivalent) across Texas.
