After five years, I made the trip back to DC. This time, there would be no government shutdown. This time, the cherry blossoms would be in bloom. This time, I would bring the family. But not the whole family.
The boys HS soccer team made it into the playoffs and advanced. Unfortunately, the second round game would be on Thursday night (the day we leave for our trip). And if they were to win and advance to the third round, they would play on Monday (and we would still be in DC).
I had let the big boys decide if they still wanted to go to DC or stay home and play with their team. Jacob decided to continue on with the trip as planned and Andrew decided to stay home and play in what he said was possibly "a once in a lifetime" opportunity. So with that, we took a family trip (five nights) without Andrew.

This year was the first Easter that we didn't spend with family since... hmmm. I honestly don't remember the last time we weren't together on Easter Sunday because it probably never happened. And it's been tradition to have an annual egg hunt for the younger kids but sadly, COVID-19 came into the world. But I wasn't going to let a virus deny the kids of an egg hunt.

Let me tell you about the fun stuff first. In the morning, we had an Easter egg scavenger hunt. We kept the clues really simple like "Where do you begin and end your day?" (their room) at which point they had to find the hidden egg, which contained a clue to the next egg. The clues eventually led them to their Easter gift basket which included various books and toys. It's like Christmas in April. For lunch, we went over to Lynn's aunt's house to celebrate with her family... and that is where I experienced the worst feeling ever.

Mass on Easter Sunday was crazy. Besides Christmas, you won't find this many "practicing Catholics" jammed into a church at one time. So where are they on the other weeks? Probably at home taking care of their toddler who is going through his terrible twos but is not yet two. Yes, I too am guilty of not going to mass on a weekly basis but I try. I blame Tyson.

It started with Good Friday where I went to a Catholic assisted living facility of all places and finished my work by noon. Hallelujah. I had one last, mandatory non-meat lunch with the family at Pearland Seafood (they should have kept their company name of Baytown Seafood but probably feared people questioning why a restaurant would be called Baytown Seafood in the city of Pearland). Anyway, this is our go-to for fried seafood and we always get the etouffee. Their french fries look very plain.. thick and yellow (no visible skin) but I really like them. Maybe it's the touch of seasoning they put on them or maybe it's because it's always hot and freshly fried that makes them good. They also serve some Thai dishes and hamburgers but we will probably never try those. It's like going to a steakhouse and ordering the fish. As for the rest of the day, I don't remember what happened as I'm too lazy to get up and ask Lynn but I'm sure it was quality time well spent.
