As an impressionable kid, I grew up listening to the same music as my friends and family: synthpop/dance pop/electronic music. Pet Shop Boys, Erasure, New Order. And that was back in the early 90's. Flash forward 20 years later and Pet Shop Boys are still touring! I was lukewarm about this. Sure I loved them as a kid but today? Eh. But I've never seen them live and when will I ever get a chance again? So I dragged Lynn along on a random Wednesday night to see my old music idols.

If you squint hard enough, you can see Flume in the middle of the blinding lights. Let me preface this post by telling you the obvious, I'm old now. So my account of his concert is probably different from everyone else's experience. First of all, it started on 9 p.m. on Sunday, which means after the opening acts, Flume won't come on until way later (11:20 p.m. to be exact). Doesn't he know that's way past my bedtime?

Disclosure is one of my all time favorite groups. I don't think there's a day that goes by that I don't listen to a Disclosure song (since I haven't changed my car CDs in months but I never get tried of it) and they're a group off of my short "must see live" list. Being that they're based in the UK, I could only hope that they come to Texas. Last year that happened when they played at ACL but baby Elliot came at the same time so that was out of the question. Fast forward later they announced a tour for their latest album and Houston was one of those cities! So naturally, I instantly bought tickets.

Last weekend, we were in Austin for the first weekend of ACL. Usually a trip to Austin would only be a quickie but this felt like a mini-vacation. Maybe it was because we went without the kids. Or maybe it was because we stayed from Friday afternoon to Monday morning (a tad bit longer than our usual weekend trips). But it was nice. The weather cleared up and the temperature dropped. The weekend was perfectly setup.

The extended weekend began Friday night when we (sans kids) met up friends at Winston's to celebrate my friend Thu's birthday. I honestly can't recall when Lynn and I last went out to "drink" but it's been a long time. I remember the pre-kid days when we used to each drink 64 oz mugs of cheap lite beer. Those days are long gone now. I don't consider myself a beer snob but since the boom of craft beer, there's no way I'm going back to that piss water. As for Lynn, she's not much of a drinker anymore. That's no problem as I gladly drank for two.

Saturday morning I woke up way too early for a weekend (6:30 am) and decided to waste time in front of the computer. I was reading up on events and noticed that the Free Press Summer Fest was going on that weekend. And then this conversation happened in my head...

Last weekend was memorable... but not the way I would've liked to remember it. It all started in July when I came across a random article that said "New Order to Tour North America for the First Time in Seven Years". New Order was one of my favorite groups when growing up and I've never seen them before. I must go! Coincidentally, it was the same weekend as the Red River Rivalry. We'll be without kids and this opportunity won't ever present itself again so yes, I must go to that too!
Hi, I make sweet treats.
